Captain Robert F.Hickey, USN (Dec)
on the Bridge of the Hancock CV-19

Captain Robert F. Hickey, USN (Deceased)
Late in WWII, Captain Hickey of the Hancock was bound to be concerned with the morale of the whole ships company.

Some of the jobs below deck were to become hum-drum and boring. It was easy for them to become isolated and feel they were not a part of the real action.

One of the ideas presented to boost up the Morale of the ship, was to let the artists onboard design artwork characters to be painted on the starboard side of the engine cowling of the various aircraft to be observed by any individual that happened to be watching the movement of aircraft on deck.

The contest was open to any one, especially those below deck that needed the exposure the most.

It may have started with Captain Dickey, but I am sure that Captain Hickey and Capt Gallery were involved and everyone received a lot of fun out of the project.

- The End -

At the war's end, while in Tokyo Bay on the USS Hancock, Hersch Pahl smiles for the camera as he poses with VF-6's beloved "Felix the cat" in preparation for the Air Grouip Six cruise book.

Felix the Cat

"Felix the Cat" was Butch O'Hare's beloved Mascot of VF-3, and when the squadron was re-formed in San Diego in 1943, the squadron designation was changed from VF-3 to VF-6.

Felix continued to be the squadron mascot of the new squadron, VF-6, and all of Butch's Boys had a deep affection for their mascot, Felix the Cat..

Hersch Pahl continues to have a deep and abiding fondness for this very familiar and mischievous little cat, which holds so many warm memories for him of Butch O'Hare and his Squadron mates of VF-6.
